IBM Simon |
First Smartphone in the World
Some people might think it's the first generation iPhone. However, Apple's smartphone is not quite long enough, the first iPhone officially issued in 2007. There are some others that may appoint Communucator launched by Nokia in 1996. Communucator is a phone that is long enough direlease. But apparently, there is a smart phone that much longer. The smartphone is IBM Simon. When viewed from its shape, IBM Simon looks more like a walkie-talkie. In fact, the phone is the first smart phone out to be distributed in the world. Noted in its history, on August 16, 1994, IBM Simon officially sold on the market is quite limited. Because the smartphone is only available 15,000 units, and only sold in the United States.
This phone is fairly heavy, weighs about 500 grams. Nevertheless, some businessmen desperately want a ponsel that can be used for cell phone as well as mini computers. A curator of the Science Museum in London named Charlotte Connelly, stated that IBM Simon is the phone that has the most complete features of its era.
"The Simon wasn't called a smartphone back then. But it had a lot of the features we see today. It had a calendar, it could take notes and send emails and messages and combined all of this with a cell phone."Connelly said.
IBM Simon's Design
When we viewed from the design, this phone is fairly large. But with sophistication, this phone is pretty much targeted even though the price is relatively expensive. Disadvantages of this phone is a battery run out quickly, the phone can only be on for 60 minutes."It looks like a grey block but it's not as big as you'd imagine. It had a stylus and a green LCD screen, which is similar in size to the iPhone 4. In fact, it's not a bad looking thing." Connelly said.
Because IBM still has a lot of less, IBM Simon's circulation lasted only two years, since the phone was released in 1994. But now IBM Simon displayed on the exhibition in the Science Museum London themed "Information Age exhibition". The exhibition is to commemorate 200 years of communication history and information technology in UK.
